Background

The Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS), in collaboration with the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), has launched an Anticipatory Action program aimed at mitigating the effects of cold waves. This initiative target areas within the Drakensberg, ‘Moteng, Lebelonyane, and Thaba Putsoa passes, areas that are particularly vulnerable to extreme cold conditions.

The primary goal of this Anticipatory Action is to reduce the adverse impact of cold waves on affected communities. In line with this, the program will provide vital support to herders, vulnerable households, and schoolchildren, who are most at risk during these extreme weather events.

As part of this initiative, LRCS plans to distribute protective clothing to the targeted groups to help shield them from the severe cold. These efforts are designed to alleviate the immediate challenges posed by low temperatures and ensure that vulnerable populations have the necessary resources to stay warm and safe during cold wave events.
